Phil Barnhart Frequently Asked Questions

What are the issues you are mainly concerned with?
Education, health care and family wage jobs in a sustainable environment. I believe if we educate our children, care for our senior citizens, and encourage clean businesses that provide good jobs, we will have strong families, healthy communities and a vibrant economy.

How can we improve our schools?
Increase school funding, reduce class sizes, and improve access to college and job training programs.

Won’t our taxes increase if we spend more on schools?
Ordinary Oregonians already pay enough in taxes. We need make corporations and the very wealthy pay their fair share. We also need a rainy day fund for education. We must think creatively about how to create more family wage jobs so we do better when the economy turns down.

Why are you always talking about jobs and the environment?
For too long we have been told that we have to make a choice between good jobs and clean air, water and pristine forests. I disagree. If Oregon is going to be state we are are proud to pass on to our children, we must nurture a clean, robust economy. In most cases we know how to do it, it is only a matter of encouraging the right companies to grow, start up, or move here, and to train our workers so they are ready for the opportunities that come. We can have a good economy and clean environment.

What are you doctor of?
I have a Ph.D. in psychology.
